Dear experienced Linux users: What I'm about to post may be innacurate, and just plain stupid, but bear with me.

Okay, so I've successfully (wow, there are a lot of double-letters in that word) installed Slackware Linux 8.1 onto a computer in my living room.

My problem is that I can't load the GUI, Xorg or X, whatever it's called. After running xf86config, and putting in my answers, X still has a fatal error: No screens (or wrong screen configuration).

I'm using a Compaq MV540 monitor, with a Maxtor Millenium 2064 video card.

I downloaded the Compaq manual, and it says the horizontal frequency is 31.5-54kHz. The vertical says 5-120Hz. I input those right, so I'm guessing that's not the problem.

I know nothing about video cards, so I don't really know how much "video memory" my card has. From the card list, I guessed "Maxtor Millenium 2MB" and chose "2048K" as my video memory. This is probably wrong.

I've also read that Linux doesn't get along with Maxtor video cards.

Any troubleshooting or help would be appreciated. Thanks...
